Introduction Offsite Engineered Products Ltd (OEP) is a leader in modular construction, producing over 3,000 bathroom pods and utility cupboards annually. With over 180 employees across its factory, site, and offices, OEP recognises its role in reducing carbon emissions in the construction sector—a sector responsible for 36% of the UK’s total emissions. By adopting sustainable practices and innovative offsite construction methods, OEP is taking measurable steps towards a lower-carbon future.
Carbon Footprint Assessment OEP undertook a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment in accordance with the UK Government Carbon Reduction Plan and GHG Protocol guidelines. The assessment included Scope 1, Scope 2, and five key Scope 3 categories, revealing the following emission sources:
Scope 1: 6% (On-site vehicle fuel consumption)
Scope 2 (Purchased electricity): 3% (Heating and lighting in offices and warehouses)
Scope 3 (Supply chain and indirect emissions): 91%, broken down as follows:
Upstream transportation and distribution: 25%
Waste generated in operations: 11%
Business travel: 9%
Employee commuting: 33%
Downstream transportation and distribution: 12%
The largest contributor to OEP’s carbon footprint was employee commuting (33% of Scope 3 emissions), followed by upstream transportation and distribution.
Strategic Response Based on these findings, OEP developed a targeted emissions reduction strategy, emphasising:
Energy Efficiency – Implementing energy-saving measures such as motion-sensing lighting in office and staff areas to reduce electricity use.
Supply Chain Optimisation – Prioritising local suppliers to reduce transportation emissions associated with raw material delivery.
Employee Engagement – Offering incentives for low-emission commuting methods such as public transport, cycling, and carpooling.
Waste Management – Partnering with charitable organisations to divert reusable materials from landfills, particularly wood waste, which alone could contribute to 8.5% of OEP’s 2024 emissions reduction target.
Conclusion OEP’s proactive sustainability strategy demonstrates its commitment to reducing emissions and leading the way in sustainable modular construction. By optimising operations, engaging stakeholders, and committing to long-term reductions, OEP is positioning itself as a responsible leader in the industry while contributing to the UK’s broader climate goals.
